WV State Basketball Tournament 2023

There are some schools who seem to consistently qualify for state tournaments; while for others it can take multiple attempts before finally making it there.

Wahama White Falcons returned to Charleston for the 2023 tournament after missing it since 1970 under new coach Billy Zuspan and with an aim of doing something special once there.

Class A

West Virginia state basketball tournament 2023 marks a premier event for high school sports in West Virginia. Teams from around the state compete to claim victory at this prestigious competition; winning teams receive gold medals as they are honored as state champions! Held annually at Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

In 1922, West Virginia held its inaugural girls high school basketball tournament at Spencer. Huntington and Wheeling competed for the crown before critics expressed concerns that too much overtraining might cause injuries among its participants; WVSSAC eventually disbanded this tournament in 1924.

Following Title IX's passage and providing equal opportunities for female athletes, several schools continued to field girl's teams; therefore, in 1976 the tournament was brought back and held at West Virginia Wesleyan College with Dunbar winning class AAA and Northfork taking class AA respectively.

Morgantown Public High School has won 12 titles at this tournament; other schools with many victories include Parkersburg Catholic with eight championships, Wheeling Central Catholic with seven, Summers County taking home five in class AA alone.

West Virginia's most successful girl's basketball players include Mary Ostrowski from Parkersburg Catholic, Vicky Bullett from Martinsburg and Alexis Hornbuckle of Capital and South Charleston. Ostrowski earned three state player of the year awards; Bullett went on to join both U.S. Olympic women's basketball team as well as having an extensive six-year WNBA career.

2023 West Virginia State Basketball Tournament

This statewide tournament features 32 boys and 32 girls teams representing all 55 counties of West Virginia. Over two weeks, this four-round competition will begin with preliminary round play followed by quarterfinals (two quarterfinals will then follow before semifinals and finals determine state champions in both classifications).

Wheeling will host the West Virginia State Basketball Tournament 2023 this summer at Wesbanco Arena, according to an announcement Thursday by its organization. The 64-team, $1 Million winner-take-all tournament will include a regional featuring Best Virginia, an organization led by former West Virginia stars John Flowers and Kevin Jones that will play there from July 25-30.

West Virginia State Basketball Tournament 2019

The West Virginia High School Boys Basketball Tournament for 2019 will be hosted at Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center from Feb 14-19th 2019. For the third straight year, this year's state tournament has taken place there - and Evan Lasek from WSAZ has all the details.

In the boys' championship game, James Monroe High School will face Fairmont Senior High School once more to defend their crown from last year, which they lost by one point.
